After watching that Matt Cutts video on improving SEO, I got to thinking about linking and blogging.
As many of you are already know, linking is one of the essential tools in building a site that ranks high in the search engine results pages. But building links can be one of the more difficult SEO challenges because it often requires building relationships with other web sites. It's not enough to link out to other sites — you must entice them to link back to you.
Blogs are a great place to promote reciprocal links. As the typical blog format is that posts come from one author, there is the feeling of a conversation that is ongoing. Not only is the subject matter part of the conversation, but the bloggers themselves are in the spotlight. This situation creates a unique atmosphere for linking to others, especially other bloggers in the 'sphere who can link back to you.
So next time you post for the dining blog at your magazine, add a link to another blog about nightlife or some related topic, and then contact that blogger asking for a link back to your site.
